Dr. Williams

Dr. Calvin Williams is native of Chicago, IL, where he attended DePaul University and earned a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences. After finishing undergrad, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Chicago, where he studied evolution and neonatal disease models. He later attended Harvard Medical School in Boston, where he earned his Doctorate of Medicine. He then completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center, before arriving in Dallas for his dermatology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern.

“It was early in my life that I recognized, just how much importance we as a society place on our skin, and how that perceived importance plays a major role in how ‘we’ feel about our appearance and ultimately, about ourselves”, says Dr. Williams. “Our skin, tells our story, and this is why I wanted to become a dermatologist.”

Dr. Williams enjoys caring for a full range of skin issues, from eczema, psoriasis, to skin cancer, acne and so on. He enjoys treating patients off all skin types and has a particular interest in skin of color. “Being an African-American, well-cultured dermatologist, has given me insight into the unique problems that arise in darker skin types. It is well known, that some of these issues often get misdiagnosed, as some conditions just plain appear differently depending on the shade of the overall skin. And in particular, if accurate and expedient diagnoses aren’t made, pigmentation issues can become a particularly rampant problem for patients with brown skin.”

In his leisure, Dr. Williams enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, mentoring at-risk youth, or attending sport events.

Dr. Calvin Williams is a Board-Certified Dermatologist providing care for patients at Essential Dermatology Group, PLLC in Bedford, TX.

Dr. Olazagasti

Dr. Jeannette Olazagasti is originally from San Juan, PR. She earned her medical degree from University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in San Juan, PR where she was awarded several academic scholarships. In 2013, she was inducted into the distinguished Alpha Omega Medical Society. During her medical education, she also completed a prestigious Master of Science in clinical research at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Then Dr. Olazagasti completed her Internal Medicine internship and Dermatology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.

“Growing up on an island in the Caribbean, I noticed early on how skin cancer education was lacking in the general population,” says Dr. Olazagasti. “It was a time when having sun-kissed skin was glamourized, especially since many famous models and performers presented themselves with bronze tanned skin. On top of that, there were many misconceptions such as ‘Hispanics cannot get skin cancer’ or that ‘tanning at the beach is safe’; both of which are entirely false”.

After her grandfather succumbed to skin cancer Dr. Olazagasti chose to pursue a career in dermatology to train on how to diagnose and treat dermatological conditions and in particular to educate patients on sun safe practices and early recognition of the signs and symptoms of skin cancer.

Her favorite conditions to diagnose and treat are skin cancers, acne, psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema, among many others. She enjoys treating patients of all ages and all skin types. “Since moving to Texas, I was pleasantly surprised to see how much I found myself using my Spanish, much more than what I would have ever imagined,” says Dr. Olazagasti. “Being fluent in Spanish has been a blessing in my career as a physician. I truly enjoy taking care of Spanish speaking patients that otherwise could have experienced issues in their management because of a language barrier; in fact, it is unfortunate, but by the time I meet them for the first time, some share with me firsthand how they have already experienced hardships in their health because things got ‘lost in translation.’ Language barriers can have detrimental effects on a patient’s health, so I am always happy to be able to take good care of Hispanics and Latino Americans that feel more comfortable seeing a dermatologist who is fluent in Spanish, just like them.”

Dr. Olazagasti has a passion for research as well. She has multiple publications in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Journal of the American Medical Association Dermatology, among many others.

When not in clinic, Dr. Olazagasti enjoys spending time with her friends, family and her two dogs. Some of her hobbies include yoga and writing poetry.
