A tried and true treatment, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been used as a treatment for many conditions. In specialties, such as orthopedics, it has been used to help patients with joint injuries and arthritis for the past 2 decades and now it has revolutionized hair restoration treatments. An all-natural treatment, PRP is an effective and safe therapy for patients with hair loss.
Hair loss is a difficult condition for both men and women. Androgenetic alopecia, the most common type of hair loss, affects nearly 80 million American adults, with 30 million of those being women. If you are having issues with hair loss, please take a visit to Essential Dermatology Group, PLLC located in Bedford, Texas, and allow Dr. Calvin Williams and his team to formulate a plan to improve your condition. Here below, Dr. Williams will answer questions about a life-changing hair restoration treatment option called platelet-rich plasma or PRP for short.
What is PRP therapy?
It is important to talk about human physiology in order to fully understand PRP therapy, and we will attempt to give a brief introduction on the biology of hair. When we are born, we have all the hair follicles that we are meant to have in our lifetime, with only a fraction of those hairs existing on our scalp.
Each follicle thrives from the nutrients it receives from your blood and thus PRP’s effect comes from its ability to deliver those nutrients directly to your scalp and follicles. It does this by being able to isolate your body’s platelets and your blood regenerative growth factors. These components are essential and help you grow more hair and strengthen your follicles.
What will my appointment for PRP be like?
A day of therapy with PRP can be a very easy experience. We deliver the treatment in these general steps.
We first draw blood from a vein, which will be very similar to your experiences before with lab work.
The collected blood then needs to be separated into the “Platelet-rich Plasma” component, so we place the blood in a centrifuge machine that does exactly this. At this point, you will be relaxing, reading a book or even resting your eyes in our comfortable chairs.
We then gently inject the newly formed serum into the areas of your scalp where the thinning or recession is seen. Targeting these areas in a uniform fashion is crucial in our ability to achieve the results you want.
Is it painful?
We use special techniques to lessen the pain and our patients tolerate the procedure well. The injection portion of the procedure is also quick and is often over within several minutes. There is little to no downtime after the appointment and patients typically resume normal activities the same-day.
How many treatments do I need?
For the most optimal growth, our patients typically need about 4 or 5 treatments. We spread these treatments out over time, in order to facilitate the best growth. But every patient is different, and it is important at your consultation to discuss goals so your treatment plan can be individualized for you.Whenever you’re ready to stop the thinning, re-grow the edges, and/or revitalize your hair, give our team a call at 817-736-2912 or book online at www.edermgroup.com.
